As a committed Neo-Marxist, it would be a mistake to characterize Toohey as a humanist. Toohey certainly DOESN’T CARE about INDIVIDUAL, he cares about GROUPS
But Toohey doesn’t even care about groups, per se, he cares about POWER.
HE CARES ABOUT POWER BECAUSE HE’S LESS INTERESTED in HELPING the OPPRESSED THAN in PUNISHING the SO-CALLED OPPRESSOR, …
BRINGING EVERYONE DOWN to the SAME LEVEL of SUFFERING and MEDIOCRITY, RATHER THAN BRINGING EVERYONE UP TO the SAME LEVEL of PROSPERITY and EXCELLENCE.
TOOHEY HATES PROSPERITY and EXCELLENCE, BECAUSE IT INHERENTLY LEADS to INEQUALITY.
HE DOESN’T WANT EVERYONE to BE EXCEPTIONAL and WEALTHY, BECAUSE EXCEPTIONALISM and WEALTH are HIS TRUE MORAL ENEMIES.
Villains are not compelling villains unless they believe themselves to be the heroes. And in Toohey’s case, the VILLAIN IS INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES, and the HERO USHERS IN COLLECTIVE SAMENESS.
Toohey will NOT REST UNTIL ALL DIFFERENCES HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED.
Which can be brought about by no other means than VIOLENCE, that is, the legal violence that the government alone can wield, which is why Toohey is obsessed with POWER.
